Activity 1.1-Environmental Science vs. Environmental Studies

Introduction:

Concerns about the environment are on the uprise as is shown throughout the news and media. Through global communication, we are able to see the devastating affects climate change will have on humanity both physically and socially. As is so, Environmental Science has also branched out to the human aspect of environmental awareness through Environmental Studies. Both Environmental Science and Environmental Studies deal with the concerned  changes our planet is going through, and how it will affect both our species and others. The two, just have different approaches and perspectives on the matter.

Environmental Science:

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for Environmental Scientists has increased since 2012 (Environmental Science, 2021). With the changing climate and visible effects, there is a demand in science to understand these physical transformations. This is the role Environmental Science plays in our comprehension. Environmental Science handles the science and mathematics of the environmental dilemma. Scientists of this degree collect data, research out in the fields, organize their thought process, or analyze in labs. As stated on America’s Environmental College website (2021) they, “use scientific methods to discover solutions to current environmental challenges”.

Environmental Studies:

Environmental Studies focuses on the impact the environmental challenges we face now and, in the future, will have on humanity socially and economically. This includes studies on laws dealing with the environment or regulations that hurt or conserve an environment. Its concerns may be conflicts on an area that may suffer from contamination and affect the resources of the surrounding communities. Or another example would be, studies on 3rd world countries that are experiencing first hand affects that climate change has caused such as droughts and floods. In other words, “environmental studies major will study the human impact” (Enviroemploy, 2021).

Case Study:

Recently in Rome, plastic was found in the placenta of pregnant women. (Science Direct, 2021). The Environmental Science perspective would be to study the amount microplastic and what kind. This would be conducted in the lab using the scientific method to research and analyze the data collected. Environmental Studies addresses the concern on what this means to human life. Questions such how does this affect human fetuses, what areas did the women live in during their pregnancy, and what laws are in that area that deal with plastic consumerism and disposing of it.

Activity 5.2 Shingle Mountain Case Study

Problem: Dallas has had a reputation of zoning racism for as long as the slavery emancipation acknowledgement of Juneteenth. You can see this in Paul Quinn College’s map of “Poisoned by Zip Code” (2020). The Joppa community and its surrounding neighbors are within approximately 2 miles of several industrial plants and cites including Shingle Mountain. Marsha Jackson is a voice and advocate who went unheard for several months, in regards to her extremely close neighbor, the horrendous polluting illegal shingle recycling company and their infamous Shingle Mountain. I mmediate issues and what calls for action-oriented answers : For two years, Marsha Jackson and about 100 of her neighbors have had to breathe in the toxic air of the crushed shingles and watch from their yard as the pile of shingles kept growing to reach the height of a six-story building, approximately 60 feet tall and stretching more than a city block (Washington Post, 2020). They eventually came to name this ...
